A folklore metaphor for narcissistic relationships:-
There once was a story. Of times before…
Where men, fishermen to be precise, would capture a wild spirit.
A sea spirit.
A Selkie.
They would cast words of kindness to lure her in,
long enough to tempt her closer,
close enough to blindfold her with romance
And then, they would steal the most sacred part of her- her fur…
They’d lock it away,
forbidding her to return to the ocean.
Why would she abide by such a rule?
Because she chose to see the Good over the Truth…
Because the smiles, the joy, the heart-flutters,
they all tasted much sweeter than the dark reality beneath the surface.
She chose to please others,
to keep the peace within herself just a little more intact.
She chose ease in the moment,
ignoring what could mean the weight of a lifetime.
She stayed soft.
And as she did,
she was kept further and further from herself,
and from the ocean,
where emotion is in motion,
-and where all of her could have been held.
Over time,
And layers of quiet abuse,
her spirit dampened.
Her soul dimmed.
Her sparkle faded…
Until she couldn’t remember how to make a choice.
How to take a step forward.
How to live beyond basic survival.
How to get her fur coat back,
or how to reclaim the fragmented parts of her soul.
But this is modern day-
Where women hold onto their fur coats fiercely
And skin alive any men who dare to take them.
And real love…
Real love doesn’t just see the good,
or just the shadows…
It sees beyond all labels,
because it cannot be labeled.
It doesn’t pretend.
It may hurt, but it grows from the hurt.
It holds you,
and everything beyond you,
in full truth.
(Selkies are mythical beings from Celtic folklore, capable of transforming from seals into humans by shedding their skins. If their skin or fur is hidden by a human, they must remain on land—often becoming unwilling spouses. Despite forming bonds, they always long to return to the sea…)
